Privacy
Sundial has no accounts and no server of its own beyond the web host that delivers the page. Everything is calculated in your browser.
Analytics and cookies
Sundial does not use analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, and sets no cookies.
What stays in your browser
- Sound preference. Whether interface sounds are on is saved in your browser's local storage under
sundial-sound. - Tree data cache. Trees fetched for an area are cached in your browser so revisiting is faster.
- The current view. The place, date and time are kept in the page address (after the
#), which is not sent to our host. They are only shared if you copy and send the link.
You can clear all of this at any time by clearing site data in your browser.
Your location
If you press the location button, your browser asks for permission first. The coordinates are used to centre the map. Like any place you view, they are then sent to the map and search services below so that buildings, trees and the place name can be loaded. Sundial does not store your location anywhere else.
Services your browser contacts
To draw the map, your browser requests data directly from these services. Each one receives your IP address, browser details and the area or search text being requested, under its own privacy policy:
- OpenFreeMap
- Building vector tiles for the area you view.
- OpenStreetMap Foundation
- Map tiles for the ground layer.
- Photon by komoot
- The text you type into search (as you type), and the coordinates of the place you view, to look up its name.
- Overpass API (overpass-api.de)
- The coordinates of the area you view, to fetch mapped trees.
The web host that serves Sundial may keep standard access logs, such as IP addresses and requested pages, for security and operations.
